Case Study: Hilmerson Safety Rail System™
Industry Leading General Contractor – North America
$4 Billion Sales
Large general contractors have known for decades that building wooden 2×4 guardrails on a jobsite is an inefficient, costly, and wasteful practice. Due to a lack of better options, job built 2×4 guardrails are still used throughout the construction industry. This costs general contractors significant time/materials and only provides non-engineered fall protection. It also requires constant upkeep, gets thrown away at the end of a job, and limits overall profitability. As lean initiatives, eco-friendly building practices, and zero-waste to landfill goals become a standard part of the construction industry, industry leaders are always looking for ways to drive improvement.
The Hilmerson Safety Rail Solution:
In 2017, this $4 Billion Construction Industry Leader deployed the Hilmerson Safety Rail System™ on three major projects with a goal of implementing a lean reusable guardrail system with long life and quick return on investment. The Hilmerson Safety Rail System™ was deployed in kit configurations to maximize efficiencies related to inventorying, storage, transport, installations, tear downs, and reuse. A strategic combination of penetrating and non-penetrating bases and carts were utilized to maximize potential applications and protection options.
26-Story High Rise Building
Deploying the Hilmerson Safety Rail System™ on these three separate projects will have replaced approximately 80,000 linear feet of 2×4 guardrails and the associated inefficiency and wasted install labor. Using an industry average cost for 2×4 guardrails of approximately $19/lf, the deployment of the Hilmerson Safety Rail System™ will allow this customer to eliminate wasteful job built 2×4 guardrails and drive continuous improvement and lean initiatives while improving job site safety.
Improved Safety – Falls continue to be one the leading causes of fatalities in the construction industry. The 80,000lf of wooden 2×4 guardrail that was eliminated from these three projects was replaced by 80,000lf of galvanized 13-gauge steel safety rail designed and engineered by fall protection experts. With fully integrated top-rails, mid-rails, and toe-boards, passive fall protection will be uniform, predictable, and simple.
